Innovative. Award-Winning. Life-Changing.
Science at Marvelwood is active, field-based, and rooted in real-world impact.
Our Skiff Mountain campus is a living laboratory where students investigate ecosystems, conduct field research, and partner with renowned conservation organizations to address real environmental challenges. Learning happens not only in classrooms, but in forests, wetlands, and research sites just beyond our doors. Students are given unique opportunities to work with some of the top science professionals outside the school community, and to engage in research and scientific outreach on a global scale.
| Marvelwood consistently ranks among the top schools in Connecticut’s Envirothon competition, earning championship titles in three of the past five years. |
Learning Through Real ResearchStudents work alongside renowned scientists, conservationists, and researchers on projects that contribute to ongoing environmental efforts. Partnerships with organizations such as the Kent Land Trust, the Department of Environmental Protection, The Audubon Society, UConn’s Natural Resources Conservation Academy, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology give students the opportunity to gather data, restore habitats, and contribute to meaningful scientific outreach. Programs such as Envirothon and Ornithology deepen students’ understanding of natural systems and conservation. Through collaborative, inquiry-driven work, they explore wildlife, soils, aquatics, and forestry while developing solutions to real ecological challenges. As they study amphibians and aquatic insects, monitor avian populations, and restore purple martin colonies, students see how scientific inquiry leads to real change. Many have presented their findings at conferences and community events, including the Connecticut Land Conservation Conference and World Migratory Bird Day programs. |

Real-World Impact
Marvelwood students regularly apply their learning through powerful projects and partnerships that make a difference.
- Restoring inland purple martin populations for the Connecticut DEEP
- Creating GIS story maps using ArcGIS
- Supporting wildlife rehabilitation and conservation efforts
- Socializing puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind
Our Campus As the Classroom
Skiff Mountain’s diverse ecosystems provide daily opportunities for hands-on investigation. Students conduct field studies, analyze environmental data, and learn to observe patterns in the natural world.
The MAPS bird banding station—one of only three in North America primarily run by high school students—allows students to contribute to long-term conservation research while developing skills in data collection, analysis, and environmental stewardship. Over the years, students have documented nearly 150 bird species on or near campus.
Marvelwood is also one of the few schools in the nation to offer a year-long program in Ornithology, where students deepen their understanding of conservation and become citizen scientists through field study in New England’s richly bird-populated habitats.
“We focus on discovery and experimentation—not just memorizing facts. In a world overflowing with information, students learn to pause, question, and reflect—separating fact from opinion and finding balance between emotion and objective truth.”
— Science Department Chair
![]() | STEM in Action: Innovation, Technology & DesignAt Marvelwood, STEM is something students actively build, test, and bring to life. In the Innovation Lab, ideas move from content to creation as students design 3D-printed models, use laser engraving software, and explore digital fabrication. Courses such as Robotics and 3D Design invite students to think like engineers and create from day one. Using LEGO-based design systems, students build and program functional robots, experimenting with mechanical systems, coding, and solving design challenges in real time. In 3D Design, they move between digital modeling and hands-on construction, designing everything from original concepts to scale architectural models inspired by real-world structures. Offerings in animation, game design, computer science, and programming in Python and Scratch expand these skills, giving students multiple entry points into technology and innovation. This is STEM that students can see, touch, and refine—where creativity meets technical skill, and where learners gain the confidence to bring their ideas into the world. |
