Understanding the Past, Engaging the Present

History at Marvelwood travels far beyond facts and dates.

It comes alive to help students understand how the past actively shapes their world today. In our small and spirited classes, students learn to analyze sources, weigh diverse perspectives, and develop the confidence to articulate their own points of view.

Learning in Action.

We believe history should be felt and experienced. Whether students are analyzing physical artifacts, using military tactics in a high-stakes game of Diplomacy, or debating global delegates at Yale’s Model UN, learning is active and immersive. By stepping into the shoes of historical figures, students gain a visceral understanding of the complexities of human decision-making.

"I love teaching at Marvelwood because I get to see students develop the confidence to hold their own in a debate in real-time. It’s about finding their voice."

A Curriculum of Choice and Depth

Our faculty are given the freedom to bring their passions into the classroom, allowing them to delve deeper into the topics that resonate most with their students.

From the physics and history of ancient ballistics—where students might find themselves shooting bows and slingshots with an instructor—to the study of modern economics and government policy, our courses are designed to be as engaging as they are intellectually rigorous.

Proven Academic Excellence

While we prioritize engagement, we never sacrifice rigor.

Marvelwood was recently awarded a Bronze Star on the AP Honor Roll, and our History Department proudly offers Advanced Placement courses. Our graduates consistently report that their time in Marvelwood history classrooms left them uniquely prepared for the demands of college-level research and writing.

Tools for Global Citizenship.

Beyond the classroom, we equip students with the analytical tools necessary to participate intelligently in the political process.

By understanding how government actions and economic shifts shape society, our students graduate as informed "citizen scientists" of the world, ready to make thoughtful decisions at local, national, and global levels.
