Language Learning in a Real Community

Marvelwood welcomes students from around the world and provides the support they need to thrive academically and socially in an English-speaking environment.

Approximately 15% of our student body is international, creating a diverse community where language learning happens naturally through daily interactions with peers and teachers.

Marvelwood integrates international students fully into campus life. In classrooms, residence halls, activities, and community events, international students practice English through authentic conversations and shared experiences.

"The encouragement I received from my teachers and classmates helped me overcome my fear of speaking English. I learned that the most important part of learning English isn't speaking it perfectly, but having the confidence to communication without being afraid of making mistakes."

Individualized Language Support

Marvelwood’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to meet each student where they are.

During the first weeks of school, students are assessed and placed into courses that match their level of English proficiency. Classes are small at both the elementary and intermediate levels, and instruction is highly individualized, allowing teachers to adapt lessons to each student’s strengths, challenges, and learning style.

Students may take ESL-focused courses in literature, science, and history, helping them build language skills while engaging with academic content. Small classes emphasize discussion, collaboration, and real-world communication so students can grow as confident English speakers.

The goal is simple: to help students quickly gain the language skills and confidence needed to succeed alongside their peers in Marvelwood’s college-preparatory curriculum.

Learning Through Culture and Experience

Language learning extends beyond classroom walls as field trips, cultural experiences, and everyday campus life expose students to the history, traditions, and communities that shape the United States.

ESL faculty regularly design real-world experiences that help students practice language in meaningful contexts—from visiting museums and historical sites to learning how maple syrup is made in a traditional sugaring shack, carving jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween, or taking their first photos in front of the Statue of Liberty.

At the same time, international students enrich the Marvelwood community by sharing their own cultures and perspectives. Heritage dinners, cultural celebrations, and student-led events create opportunities for students to learn from one another and build lasting global connections.

"Marvelwood gives ESL students a home.  Faculty, students and peers from the US and all over the world are incredibly welcoming and eager to chat. If you run into difficulties, they're quick to lend a hand, whether it's helping with English or just offering thoughtful advice and insights."
