History

70 Years of Marvelwood

In 2026, Marvelwood marks 70 years of helping students discover who they are and what they’re capable of becoming.

Across generations, our core values—honesty, respect, responsibility, and service to others—have remained constant, guiding students as they grow into thoughtful, capable adults. While the world has changed, our commitment to knowing each student and supporting their journey has never wavered.

A History Rooted in Purpose

Marvelwood School was founded in 1956 with a clear and compassionate vision:

To create a place where students who had not yet discovered how to make the most of themselves could be seen, supported, and challenged to grow.

Established in Cornwall, Connecticut by Robert A. Bodkin and Ian Hanna, the school filled a critical gap between traditional college preparatory programs and strictly remedial models. From the beginning, Marvelwood offered something different—a thoughtful balance of structure, support, and academic challenge designed to meet students where they were and help them move forward with confidence. That founding purpose still defines Marvelwood today.

What’s the meaning beHIND our name?
Ian Hanna named the school in recognition of his relative Donald Grant Mitchell, an American novelist who wrote under the pseudonym Ik Marvel. The family owned a 600-acre estate called “Marvelwood” at the site of the present Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT.

From Cornwall to Kent

Marvelwood’s early years were marked by ingenuity and community spirit.

Dormitories were converted from private homes, faculty wore many hats, and students were known as individuals. In 1970, the school became coeducational, expanding both opportunity and perspective within the school community.

A pivotal moment came in 1995, when Marvelwood relocated to its current campus in Kent. In a remarkable month-long effort, students, faculty, families, and friends came together to move the school—an undertaking that reflected the very values Marvelwood seeks to instill. The new campus provided space to grow while preserving the close-knit character that defines the school experience.

Values That Endure

Marvelwood historical building

Marvelwood’s core values

Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Service to others.

Our values developed and deepened as the school grew, and continue to link generations of students and families. These principles are not abstract ideals; they shape daily life on campus, guiding how students learn, lead, and care for one another.

From the earliest days of Mrs. Bodkin quietly observing students in the library to ensure that no one struggled alone, to today’s intentionally small classes and personalized support, Marvelwood has always believed that when students feel known and valued, they are empowered to thrive.

Growing With Intention

Over seven decades, Marvelwood has evolved while staying true to its mission. Enrollment has grown, the curriculum has expanded, and the campus has modernized.

Yet, the school’s commitment to individualized attention and meaningful relationships remains unchanged. Today, Marvelwood blends a rigorous college preparatory program with customized academic support that helps each student reach their potential.

The school’s commitment to individualized attention and meaningful relationships remains unchanged.

Leadership Through the Years

Marvelwood’s Heads of School have guided the school with a steady commitment to its mission.
