At Marvelwood, courses are designed to develop both academic knowledge and the essential life skills that prepare students for college and beyond. 

Each subject and academic stage builds with intentionality each year. Students deepen their learning, their understanding of the world, and their sense of responsibility within it. This approach — purposeful, flexible, and deeply human — is what sets our academic program apart. In addition to its intellectual rigor, our curriculum is grounded in the themes of our Portrait of a Graduate framework, which translates Marvelwood's core values into specific, observable skills and mindsets. 

It asks not just what we are teaching, but what skills are we developing — and what kind of person we are helping each student become? Across every grade level and discipline, our faculty plan with that question in mind.

Faculty connect classroom content to Marvelwood’s core values, providing a foundational throughline for students that deepens as they move through their academic experience. They begin to develop self-awareness and the courage to take intellectual risks. 

A freshman or sophomore learning to approach challenges with honesty and respect is laying the groundwork for the responsibility and service they'll model as a junior and senior—leading, mentoring, and preparing to carry Marvelwood's values into the world beyond campus. By the time they’re ready to move on to their next chapter, these values aren't aspirational—they're habitual.

While the curriculum defines what students learn, Marvelwood’s faculty is free to bring that learning to life in dynamic ways tailored to each group of students. 

Academic program results The result is an academic program that is both structured and flexible—designed to challenge students while supporting their individual growth.  When teaching is free to evolve, curiosity follows. Classrooms become incubators of creative and critical thinking. This is what keeps the classroom energy alive and electric—for teachers, students, and the material itself. Courses combine foundational academic study with exciting discussion, hands-on projects, research, and interdisciplinary exploration. Teachers adapt their approach based on the dynamics of each classroom. They adjust assessments, feedback, and instruction to meet students where they are.  Whether a class is exploring the causes of World War I or analyzing a piece of literature, students are building the intellectual rigor, self-awareness, and skills that define a Marvelwood graduate.
