Arts Programming

The Art of Self-Expression

The arts at Marvelwood are a shared language through which students explore identity, build confidence, and become powerful communicators.

In rehearsal rooms, studios, digital labs, and on stages, students are given the space and skills to express themselves like never before. Through that exploration, they experience immense growth as both creators and people.

“In my classroom, students are not just participants; they are the primary architects of the creative process.”

Programming Overview

Elective courses in studio art, ceramics, music, theatre, photography, 3D art, and film allow students to shape a program that reflects their interests, with opportunities for after-school activities, clubs, and performances. They can choose to dive deeply into a single discipline or explore across mediums through a combination of hands-on learning, history, theory, and critique. The goal is not simply to study art or create exceptional work, but to understand the ideas and perspectives behind it.

Our location in the culturally-rich Litchfield and Berkshire region—with easy access to New York City’s world-renowned museums and theatres—extends the classroom beyond campus and brings inspiration within reach.

Theatre

A Stage for Everyone

Marvelwood’s theatre program reflects the spirit of the school: inclusive, collaborative, and deeply rooted in community. Every student excited about getting involved has opportunities to contribute, whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes in technical production, stage crew, or creative leadership roles. Students may also elect to take theatre class. Faculty, families, and even local youth sometimes join our productions, creating a rare, multi-generational experience.

The Marvelwood Players

Through two annual productions—a fall musical and a winter play—students develop confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of shared responsibility. Veteran performers mentor newcomers. Creative decisions are shared. The result is not just a performance, but a collective achievement that resonates from the campus stage to the community.

Visual Arts

Craft, Design, and Discovery

The visual arts introduce students to the core principles of design through 2D and 3D media, drawing, painting, ceramics, and mixed media. Classrooms function as collaborative studios where creative exploration, technical skill, peer feedback, and mentorship are part of daily practice.

“In both the art studio and the ceramic studio, there is a strong atmosphere of camaraderie. Since each class is made up of learners with varying levels of ability, experience, and expertise, students are encouraged to help each other when they notice a peer struggling with a new technique.”

Post-class Opportunities

Outside of class, students are offered additional studio time and opportunities to experiment with new materials and techniques. Creative projects are regularly displayed across campus, allowing all members of the school community to see and celebrate students' work. Museum and studio visits throughout the region bring artistic traditions and contemporary practice into direct conversation with students’ own work.

Film

Capturing Stories That Matter

Marvelwood’s award-winning film department offers a wide range of electives to help students create and connect to moving pictures. Students can take classes that center around film studies, learning how and why their favorite movies were made in order to strengthen the association between the time period and the art that came from it. In film production classes, students engage in the entire creative process—from writing, to filming, to editing—while using a range of equipment, from their own iPhone to drones, to create original films of their own.

Marvelwood student films have been selected for local and national festivals, including the All-American High School Film Festival in New York City, reflecting both the quality of the work and the depth of student engagement.

Music

Creativity, Collaboration, and Performance

Music is an accessible and integral part of the Marvelwood experience, with more than half the student body participating through classes or extracurricular opportunities. From beginners to advanced musicians, instruction is offered at all levels.

Students can study music theory, chorus, or ensemble performance, such as jazz and rock bands. Private lessons in select instruments offer additional opportunities for individualized growth. Concerts and open mic nights throughout the year give students the experience of performing for a live audience and sharing their work with the community.
