Assistant Camp Director for Skiff Mountain Summer Camp 
Position Type: Full-Time (Seasonal with Some Year-Round Responsibilities) 
Reports To: Camp Director 
Location: 476 Skiff Mountain Road, Kent, Connecticut 
Salary $15,000.00 Camp season is 6/16/26 to 8/14/26 with some year-round responsibilities

Position Overview

The Assistant Camp Director is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for helping create a safe, joyful, and enriching camp experience for all campers. Working closely with the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director helps oversee daily operations, guides and mentors staff, supports camper well-being, and contributes to the design and delivery of high-quality programs. The ideal candidate is an energetic, organized, and collaborative leader who is passionate about youth development, staff growth, and the transformative power of summer camp.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision 
⦁   Assist in the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of seasonal staff.
⦁   Model and cultivate a positive, inclusive, camper-centered culture. 
⦁   Serve as a visible and engaged leader across camp, supporting counselors, instructors, and program heads. 
⦁   Provide leadership in conflict resolution and camper-care concerns. 
⦁   Plan and facilitate aspects of pre-camp staff training.

Operations & Administration 
⦁    Help manage daily schedules, logistics, and communication across departments. 
⦁    Support risk management efforts and ensure adherence to safety procedures, protocols, and emergency plans. 
⦁    Contribute to the planning and execution of pre-season training and orientation. 
⦁    Assist with parent communication, including responding to inquiries and providing updates as needed. 
⦁    Support transportation logistics, check-in/check-out procedures, and overall operational systems.

Program Development 
⦁    Collaborate with the Camp Director and program team to design, implement, and assess engaging, developmentally appropriate program offerings. 
⦁    Support specialty program areas (e.g., outdoor adventure, arts, athletics, enrichment) based on experience and camp needs. 
⦁    Ensure program quality, consistency, and alignment with the camp’s mission. 
⦁    Ensure compliance with all safety, health, and operational policies of Marvelwood and Skiff Mountain Summer Camp, as required by the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood.

Camper Well-Being 
⦁    Help oversee camper health, wellness, and behavior management while building strong, supportive relationships with campers and families. 
⦁    Partner with the Camp Director and Health Center staff to address medical concerns, behavioral issues, and homesickness. 
⦁    Maintain accurate documentation related to camper care and incidents.

Community Engagement 
⦁    Foster a welcoming, inclusive community where all campers and staff feel valued and supported. 
⦁    Lead or assist with special events, evening programs, and all-camp activities.
⦁    Serve as an ambassador for the camp’s mission in interactions with families, staff, and external partners. 

Qualifications 
⦁    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, youth development, recreation, or a related field. 
⦁    Prior leadership experience in an overnight camp or similar residential youth setting required. 
⦁    Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
⦁    Ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a diverse staff team. 
⦁    Experience with conflict resolution, behavior management, and crisis response. 
⦁    Demonstrated ability to remain calm, flexible, and solutions-oriented in a fast-paced environment. 
⦁    Current certifications (or willingness to obtain): First Aid/CPR; lifeguard, ropes course, WFA/WFR, or other specialty certifications preferred. 
⦁    Ability to live on-site during the summer season and participate fully in camp life.

Working Conditions 
⦁    Live-in position during summer months; extended hours, including evenings and weekends, are expected. 
⦁    Physically active environment that involves walking long distances, lifting moderate weight, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. 
⦁    Some off-season hours for planning, hiring, and training (may be remote or hybrid).
