60-Second Interview: Zach Maizel '04, Athletic Director

When I was growing up, I wanted to be:

An Air Force Pilot.

I got into education because:

Wrestling and coaching is a passion.

A few words or phrases that describe my approach to teaching/ working with teenagers:

Fair but firm.

I am constantly surprised by:

The resilience of Marvelwood Students.

Describe a student who's done well at Marvelwood:

I had a wrestler who went from 89 pounds, not winning any matches, to a 113 pound All New England wrestler, who upset so many ranked wrestlers in the final 30 seconds. He has an incredible heart!

A favorite project I've done with students:

Yard clean up of an elderly couple for community service

If I could take a trip anywhere with students, it would be to:

Washington, D.C.

What I appreciate about Marvelwood students:

Deep caring for one another.

The funniest/ most interesting/ most memorable thing a student said:

When discussing choosing a name when coming to the USA, a Korean student told me that he could have picked any name. When I exclaimed “Any name?!” He responded with “Yes, I could have been Jesus!”

Three things I want my students to take away:

Resiliency, strong work ethic, and empathy.

When I'm not teaching, I like to:

Hang with my dog, Abbey.
