Sustainability & Conservation in Action: Solar Comes to Marvelwood

Two new solar fields are now online at the Marvelwood School! Installed this spring by Skyview Ventures and AEC Solar, the two small fields are powering four buildings on the School’s 83-acre campus: the Performing Arts Center, Athletic Center, Calhoun Schoolhouse, and the Dining Hall. Together, the fields generate approximately a half-megawatt of power.  In addition, four electric vehicle charging stations are now available on campus, and overhead lights in the School’s gymnasium and theatre have been switched out for energy-efficient LEDs.

Plans are also underway for a larger, 1-megawatt solar field to be installed on campus in 2022.

This further investment in renewable energy will allow the School to generate 100% of its electric energy needs through renewable sources.  Surplus energy generated by the three solar fields will be exported to Eversource’s distribution network.

Head of School Blythe Everett P'14, '16:

Marvelwood is dedicated to environmental responsibility, and the School is proud to teach, model, and support the values of sustainability and conservation.

Construction of the upper solar field on the site of four unused tennis courts.

The finished upper solar field is now powering three buildings on the north side of campus

Construction was timed so that it didn't interfere with the Purple Martin nesting season, an important conservation effort in which the School is actively involved.

The lower solar field is next to the Facilities area and is now powering the Dining Hall building.
