Charlie Reznikoff ‘15, a recent graduate of Concordia University Chicago, has signed his first professional contract with Hapoel Zefat Galil, to continue his basketball career in Israel. Charlie signed a one year contract on Thursday, August 6th, with a team option for a second season, and reports to training camp on September 1st. Hapoel Zefat Galil competes in the North Division of Liga Artzit and was 9-7 over the course of the coronavirus shortened 2019-2020 season, finishing fourth. “I am beyond grateful to play professional basketball. I can remember being a young teenager doing drills in the Burton Alumni Gymnasium at Marvelwood. I am excited for the journey,” Charlie stated. Charlie was a member of the Marvelwood basketball team for two seasons, playing 31 games for the Pterodactyls and was named to the All HVAL and All NEPSAC teams both years. Charlie played college basketball at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, before concluding his college basketball career at Concordia. When talking to Concordia about this next step, Charlie talked about what it means to him to be playing basketball in Israel: “I am excited to be a citizen in the country of my Jewish heritage and revisit the land of my elders.” Charlie also talked about making the jump to the next level: “It is a dream come true to play basketball at the professional level. However, with that being said, this is only the start. Everything will be earned, not given, through hard work, daily approach, and consistent focus. September 1st can’t come soon enough!”

Playing in the Burton Alumni Gymnasium for the Pterodactyls

Charlie played basketball at Marvelwood under former coach and Director of Athletics Dana Mason, who talked about Charlie’s two seasons as a Pterodactyl in 2014 and 2015. “Charlie was a consummate teammate and a pleasure to coach. His dedication to the sport of basketball during those years propelled him to play at the next level in college,” Mason reminisced of his time coaching the now professional player. Mason went on to talk about the off the court intangibles that Charlie brought to Marvelwood and basketball: “The thing that stands out for me about Charlie, was not that he was a 1st Team NEPSAC All-Star, a double-double machine, or that he could play all 5 positions on the court. What impressed me the most about Charlie was how respectful of the game he was. Charlie made a point to shake hands with both the referees and the opposing coaches before and after every game. His positive attitude and great sense of humor made those two seasons a lot of fun for everyone involved with our team. Best wishes to Charlie as he continues to follow his passion as a professional.”

Charlie’s accolades during his time at Marvelwood and continuous improvement which brought his game to the level it is today, would have been much tougher without great friends and teammates that helped facilitate his rise to the professional ranks. Former Marvelwood basketball players Enzo Bertolotti ‘15 and Kevin Meiselman ‘16, who played with Charlie shared their thoughts on their teammate making it to a level that no other player has in our school’s history. Enzo, who was a point guard on the 2015 team with Charlie, talked about the work ethic he saw from the already talented player: “It’s a prime example of a culmination of a strong work ethic, heart and determination. I think this goes to show that regardless of a strong resume or clout, hard work pays off.” Kevin, who also played on that 2015 team and set numerous 3 point records with the help of inside-out play and Charlie and Enzo’s great passing, also talked about the pride of seeing his friend and teammate succeed. “I’m beyond proud of Charlie. If he keeps up the hard work, he’ll take his game to even greater heights. It’s been fun watching his game develop and him earning this contract,” proclaimed Kevin. The entire Marvelwood community is incredibly proud and extremely excited for Charlie as he continues his basketball career across the world in Israel!
