Marvelwood's Envirothon Team at Nationals!
In May, Marvelwood’s Envirothon team won the 2021 Connecticut State competition. The State program is organized by the Connecticut Envirothon program (ctenvirothon.org). in July, Marvelwood represented the State of Connecticut at the national competition, coordinated by NCF Envirothon (Envirothon.org) and hosted by Nebraska's Natural Resources Districts. Out of 40 teams from three countries (United States, China, and Canada), Marvelwood finished 34th overall with some very impressive results in each category: tied for 25th in Aquatics, 13th in Forestry, tied for 9th in Soils, 19th in Wildlife, tied for 17th in Current Issues, and 33rd in Oral Presentation.
In addition, Aiden '23 won the photo contest with a picture of an American Kestrel nestling being banded. In true team fashion, Ashley '24 and Brennan '22 had helped with the banding in their role as Sharon Audubon Junior Forest Technicians.
Congratulations to our incredibly dedicated and talented team of environmentalists: Aiden Cheniske '23 of Kent, Ashley Wilkins '24 of Kent, Brennan Wilkins '22 of Kent, Maddie Paddock '21 of Lakeville, and Olivia Pignataro '21 of Carmel, NY, as well as their faculty advisor, Science Department Chair Laurie Doss. Throughout the year, this intrepid group pursued a natural resource-based curriculum that culminated in a virtual field day competition in late May, where Marvelwood earned top three finishes in four out of five categories: Wildlife (1st), Soils (1st), Aquatics (2nd) and Forestry (3rd). It was the first time in the School’s history that the team won the overall competition which sent them to nationals.
The Team also earned a General Assembly Official Citation from State Representative Maria Horn and State Senator Craig Minor. Maria Horn, who arranged for this very special honor, presented them in person on the first day of the competition.
After the competition, it was ice cream time for the team!
