Envirothon is back! Marvelwood is once again fielding a team for Connecticut Envirothon, the mission of which is "to promote environmental awareness, knowledge, and active personal stewardship among Connecticut high school students through education and team competition. The winning team will represent the State at a national competition."
Envirothon teams participate in three training workshops throughout the school year: Forestry/Soils at the Tolland County Agriculture Center on October 26th, Aquatics at the Connecticut River Academy in East Hartford on January 18th, Wildlife at the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington on March 28th. The Envirothon Field Day Competition is May 21st (location TBD), where teams are challenged in field settings. The winners of Connecticut Envirothon go on to represent the State at the Canon North American Envirothon where they compete with teams from across the United States and Canadian Provinces. Team CT has won first place in this event three times and consistently achieves high scores.
Marvelwood has participated in 10 Envirothon competitions over the years, finishing 7th overall twice, and 3rd place in Aquatics several times. This year’s team is made up of seven students, all of whom share a love of science, and especially conservation: Aiden Cherniske ‘23, Lily Brownlee ‘21, Maddie Paddock ‘21, Olivia Pignataro ‘21, Ethan Ruben ‘20, Oliver Sanchez ‘20, Brennan Wilkens ‘22. Science Department Chair Laurie Doss is the faculty advisor. Two of the team members, Aiden Cherniske ‘23 and Olivia Pignataro ‘21, are also participating in the UConn Natural Resources Conservation Academy’s Conservation Training Partnership (CTP). Last year, Oliver Sanchez ‘20 completed a year-long independent Geographic Information System (GIS) Story Map project which looked at the question: “Are Acoustic Contributions To The Connecticut Bird Atlas Possible?” Check out Oliver’s Story Map to learn what it means that the answer is YES!
We look forward to following the team’s training, culminating in the Field Day Competition in May!
