Blythe Everett was appointed Interim Head of School, effective Friday, June 1, 2018. A graduate of Trinity College (B.A., English), Blythe also earned a M.S. Ed. and a teaching certification in secondary education from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was nominated to the Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society.
Blythe was hired by Anne D. Scott, then the Director of Studies and subsequently Head of School, in 1990, when the School was located in Cornwall, CT. In her 28 years at Marvelwood, Blythe has served as Assistant Head of School, Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students, Director of Residential Life, Director of Studies, English Department Chair, and Summer School Director. She coached softball, coordinated the recreational skiing program, was the faculty advisor to the literary magazine, and participated in the theater program, both directing and acting. Blythe was the Assistant Head of School under Heads of School Anne D. Scott and Scott Pottbecker, during which time she assisted the Board of Trustees in developing and writing the current Strategic Plan, wrote and co-designed the School’s viewbook, established the School as a TOEFL testing center to better serve the needs of international students, and oversaw Marvelwood’s website, including a complete redesign. She also worked with the senior administrative team on key initiatives including developing a social networking policy, identifying and reaffirming the school’s core values, improving student retention rate from 51% to 94% over five years, and increasing enrollment by nearly 25% over five years, to a record enrollment in 2009.
Most recently, under Head of School Arthur F. Goodearl Jr., Blythe served as the Senior Dean for Academics & Curricular Development and World Languages Department Chair. In this role, she oversaw the development and implementation of the Bodkin Blue student communication protocol and guided the expansion of the Advanced Placement and arts curricula. Blythe served as co-coordinator and lead author of Marvelwood’s 2018 and 2007 NEASC Self-Study projects and subsequent interim reports; in 2008, she received a Commendation from the Board of Trustees for her work on the NEASC re-accreditation, and was awarded the Anita Brean Cup for Longtime Dedication to the School. Blythe was named Female Faculty Member of the Year four times in 16 years. Her honors-level senior English has developed a reputation as a challenging and demanding course which, according to countless alumni, more than prepares students for the rigors of college level work.
Blythe and her husband, Mike, who would eventually join the faculty in 1996 as a mathematics teacher and later department head, ran Trustees Dormitory on the Cornwall campus. When the School moved to Kent in 1995, Blythe and Mike took over Summit Dormitory. They welcomed their first child, Sam, in 1996 and Maggie in 1998. Both Sam and Maggie attended Marvelwood and were active in The Marvelwood Players, various athletic teams, and student government. At graduation in 2014, Sam was received the Bodkin Cup, “awarded to that senior whose positive and enthusiastic love of school most clearly reflects the affirmative character of Bob and Cornelia Bodkin.” Maggie, Student Body President and co-Valedictorian of the Class of 2016, was the recipient of the Wittenberg Cup, the School’s most esteemed prize, “awarded to that senior who has demonstrated conspicuous excellence in all areas of school life, scholarship, athletics, residential life and extra-curricular activities.” Now proud alumni of the School, Maggie currently attends Roger Williams University, and Sam is at Western Connecticut State University; both are pursuing degrees in the performing arts. Outside of school, Blythe enjoys acting in community theatre and is an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.
During her two-year interim appointment, Blythe will work closely with the Board of Trustees to focus on campus-wide and programmatic improvements as well as curricular initiatives designed to help fully prepare our students for the opportunities and challenges of an increasingly diverse and rapidly changing world.
