The Marvelwood Music Department, under the leadership of Eunyoung DiGiacomo and Tracy Walton, presented the Winter Concert on Friday evening, February 26th.
The program included a wide variety of music and performances, including classical instrumental music, show tunes, jazz, rap, opera, classic rock, pop, and even a video game theme!
The show opened with the Jazz Ensemble performing Zawinul's "Mercy Mercy
Mercy." The Beatles were well represented by members of the Beatles 101 class ("Golden Slumbers" and "We Can Work it Out") and Marvelwood's a capella group Six-Fifteen ("Because). Six-Fifteen also performed the theme from Super Mario Brothers, following an inspired rendition of The Flaming Lips' "Yoshiaki Battles the Pink Robots" by a costumed band.
Other pop music selections included Thalia Longchamp channeling Lady Gaga ("Paparazzi"), Karen Huang on vocal and guitar performing Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me," and Marvelwood's Rock Band covering Coldplay's "The Scientist." The Marvelwood Chorus performed "From a Distance" by Julie Gold as well as a cover of the Black Eyed Peas' "Where is the Love?" featuring student rappers Serrano Gibson and Adam Ehrman-Shapiro. Yoshi Miura on electric guitar and Tomoe Miyamoto on drums performed an original composition called "Blue and White Stripes" to round out the modern portion of the program.
Our classical musicians also had their chance to shine. HoJin Kim, on flute, performed Saint-Saens' "The Swan," accompanied by Iris Guo on piano; tenor soloist Thomas Fisher offered up Puccini's aria "Nessun Dorma"; a violin/cello/piano trio played "Last Carnival"; and a clarinet quartet played Ken Lee's "The Last Waltz" before the Marvelwood Orchestra closed the show with a rousing rendition of "He's a Pirate" from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Congratulations to Mrs. DiGiacomo, Mr. Walton, and all of the musicians and performers for a wonderful concert! Thank you to Ian Johnson for the photos.
