The following is the text of a letter that is being mailed to all returning students this week, regarding changes in the classroom dress code for 2009-2010.
June 8, 2009
Dear Marvelwood Students and Parents,
I trust that your summer has gotten off to a comfortable start!
The purpose of this letter is to let you all know that, as many of you have anticipated, we are narrowing the scope of our classroom dress code for next year. This letter provides detailed information about the changes and expectations. A complete list of approved items appears on the back of this letter. The dress code also appears on the school website and in the handbook.
The boys' dress code remains basically the same: button-down shirt and tie, traditional blazer, classic-style trousers, socks and shoes. The girls' dress code will now follow a much more traditional look, to match the boys. Girls will be required to wear a traditional-style navy blazer or navy cardigan sweater over long-sleeved Oxford cloth shirts or ¾-length-sleeved button-down blouses in solid blue or white, with pleated or flat-front slacks or skirts in a limited choice of styles and colors (see below). One important change for both boys and girls is that sneakers are not permitted during the academic day.
On Saturdays, students may wear solid blue, white or gray polo shirts in lieu of button-down shirts. Ties, blazers and cardigans are optional on Saturdays, but students are expected to comply with the rest of the dress code in terms of pants, skirts, footwear, belts, shirts tucked in, etc.
In the winter, solid white, blue or gray turtlenecks are permitted. Boys may choose to wear a navy blue cardigan sweater in lieu of a blazer. Sweaters must be worn over either a turtleneck or collared shirt, as outlined above.
For your shopping and browsing convenience, Marvelwood has teamed up with the Corey Uniform Company (http://www.coreyuniform.com/). All of the items on our dress code list are available on their site; several of the items (indicated by ** on the list on reverse) MUST be purchased through this company. Corey Co. is in the process of building us our own online catalogue, which will feature the items which are appropriate for our chosen dress code. Log-in information specific to the Marvelwood dress code will be provided to all families once the company informs us that the site is ready; meanwhile, you can log in and shop using the password “PUBLIC.” Corey Co. makes their items to order to fit each student's individual measurements. Many students were measured before the end of school; the process is easy, and a representative from the company can assist families with this over the summer. The company also does free embroidering of the Marvelwood logo on blazers, cardigans and shirt cuffs and collars by request.
Many students already own blazers, trousers, polo shirts and button-down shirts which will be appropriate for the new dress code as long as they exactly match the styles and colors shown on the Corey website. However, the styles of several of the items we have chosen (particularly skirts and sweaters) are quite specific to the Corey Company and therefore should be purchased through them. We deliberately chose this company because they provide good quality items at affordable, competitive prices. Please shop wisely; do not choose items from other stores that only “come close” to matching the items we have selected, as these will be considered inappropriate for next year's dress code.
A link to the Corey Uniform Company website will be available on the dress code page of the Marvelwood site. Families may also choose to call a Corey Co. representative for assistance, at (732) 376-1388. A representative will be on campus this fall for exchanges and/or additional purchases.
Enjoy your vacation, and we look forward to seeing you all in the fall.
Sincerely,
Scott E. Pottbecker
Headmaster
