During the week before graduation, the seniors left campus for their traditional community service project. This annual trip, coordinated by faculty member Alex Vincent '88, is the culmination of the students' community service experiences here at Marvelwood and provides them an opportunity to bond off-campus as a group for a few days before going their separate ways.
Using Camp Chinqueka in Bantam, CT as a home base and work site, the group criss-crossed the state to do volunteer work at six different locations: St. Vincent's Soup Kitchen (Hartford), The House of Break Soup Kitchen (Waterbury), The Pratt Center (New Milford), Harrybrooke Park (New Milford), Channel 3 Kids' Camp (Andover) and Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp (New Haven). The students were well-received and worked hard at every placement; all have invited us back next year, and some of the nearby locales may be introduced into the weekly community service program next year.
“When all is said and done, this trip only works because of the help and good will and spirit of the entire Marvelwood community,” said Alex. “As a result of our combined efforts, we have spread Marvelwood's name across the state of Connecticut. I want to thank all of the seniors, the other faculty chaperones, and those who covered for their colleagues at school for keeping a long-running tradition alive and kicking.”
