The English Language Learners' (ELL) Summer Program
An intensive two-week boarding program for international students
August 1st-August 14th, 2010
Marvelwood offers an intensive two-week English Language Learners' (ELL) Program that immerses international participants in the English language and American culture and prepares them for their studies in the United States. This program is open to any international student who will be enrolling in 8th to 11th grade in an American school in the coming school year.
The ELL Summer Program reflects the Marvelwood mission: to provide each participant with a unique and creative educational experience that fits his or her own learning style. This “seminar” style of learning is supported by five language-learning classes each weekday.. Beginner- and intermediate-level classes offer challenging academic coursework and group interaction, with supplemental text and computer work. Afternoons mean art classes, outdoor sports and activities, field trips and visits to local historical and cultural landmarks. Communication in English throughout the day, both on and off campus, strengthens participants' ability to express themselves and to be understood in academic, social and typical “everyday” situations.

ELL Academic Program
Learning English involves more than books, worksheets and computer programs; it is about participation. Our teaching staff is skilled, creative, optimistic and enthusiastic about helping international students to improve their English-language skills. They know how to make the classroom experience interactive and enjoyable, and how to motivate even the shyest student to get involved in a supportive and friendly environment.
All participants in the ELL program take five courses designed to strengthen all aspects of English language fluency: Grammar; Composition; Vocabulary; Reading, Listening & Speaking; and TOEFL Preparation. Students complete nightly homework during a structured evening study hall, where their teachers are available to address comprehension questions and to provide extra help.
Our Teachers
Our teaching staff is everywhere: in the classroom, in the dormitories, leading afternoon activities, organizing weekend adventures, and most importantly, acting as advisors to the participants. Our efforts are their gains; the more we interact with them, the better we can assess and quickly meet their needs. A high degree of personal involvement with their students enables teachers to write detailed reports at the end of the programs, and provide each participant with unique goals and strategies to carry with them into their new school year. Most of our teachers work at Marvelwood year-round, and several are graduates of the school; they are well-versed in project-based learning and a hands-on approach, and possess copious strategies to engage and inspire each student.
Assessment and Evaluation
At the conclusion of the program, teachers provide detailed written reports assessing each student's strengths and progress and making targeted suggestions for continued improvement. The Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) test is administered at the beginning and end of the program to provide a quantitative analysis of each student's progress. These scores are typically required for enrollment in American schools. Final reports, grades and test scores can be provided to the participants' intended schools upon request.
Tuition: $3,500.00
The comprehensive program tuition includes: academic course enrollment; books and other required course materials; all meals; school store purchases; a $20 weekly allowance; program-related transportation (excluding transportation to/from airports) and other special trips or events.
A $550.00 Airport Transportation Deposit is required for international students requiring transportation between Marvelwood and the airport at the beginning or end of the program.
